Known as the BMW New Six CS or as the E9, this group of cars was based on the New Class Coupes, yet designed to echo the styling of the New Six. Like the sedan, all New Six CS cars were fitted with different evolutions of BMW's M30 inline six engine.

Based on the 3.0 CS, the CSL, or Coupé Sport Leichtbau, was a sharper, faster, and lighter iteration of the car it was built on. BMW Motorsport was established in early 1971 to develop an E9-based machine capable of winning the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC). The resultant 3.0 CSL made its debut at the beginning of the 1973 season, by which time the Ford Capri RS2600 had long since established itself as the dominant force.
